An introduction to netball

Netball Sweden describe netball as a gender-neutral, court-based ball sport, that can be modified and adapted to suit all physical abilities. Played by over 20 million people worldwide, it is mostly popular in Commonwealth countries.

Worried that you don't know the rules of netball, or you can't remember too much about footwork? With thanks to Play Simple Netball, we've put together a brief netball guide to get you started!

We always make sure to help each other out during play, so don't worry if you still have questions before joining in.

Basics:

The objective is to simply score more goals than the other team, by throwing the ball into the hoop at your end of the court!

14 players on the court: two teams of 7.

The court is split into thirds: each player has a designated zone they can play in, depending on their playing position.

Footwork:

A player cannot run or move whilst they have the ball.

A player can receive the ball with both feet in the air, or jump and land equally on both feet, and then select ONE foot to move.

If a player catches the ball and lands on one foot, that foot is their landing foot and cannot be moved again until they have released the ball.

Obstruction:

A player attempting to intercept or defend the ball must be at least 3ft from the player with the ball.

The players

Goal Keeper (GK): To work with GD and prevent the GA / GS from scoring goals

Goal Defence (GD): To win the ball and reduce the effectiveness of the GA

Wing Defence (WD): To look for inceptions and prevent the WA from feeding the circle

Center (C): To take the centre pass and link the defence and attack

Wing Attack (WA): To feed the circle players giving them shooting opportunities

Goal Attack (GA): To feed and work with GS to score goals

Goal Shooter (GS): To score goals and work in and around the circle with the GA
